Russia Affirms Ongoing Efforts with US to Implement Anchorage Agreements

(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Russia and the United States are still working to implement the agreements reached by the two countries’ leaders during last year’s meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov emphasized Russia’s ongoing commitment to advancing a settlement process in Ukraine. “Work is continuing,” he said.

He highlighted what the Kremlin calls the “spirit of Anchorage,” referring to the mutual understandings reached during the meeting, which Moscow believes could lead to a breakthrough in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. “These understandings reached in Anchorage are fundamental, and they are capable of moving the settlement process forward and enabling a breakthrough,” Peskov added.

The Kremlin official also noted that negotiations are most effective when conducted privately, without public pressure. Moscow is reportedly awaiting a response to President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to use frozen Russian assets in the US to pay for a membership in the US-promoted Board of Peace.

In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed frustration with the United States, claiming it is no longer prepared to implement the proposal it had presented in Anchorage for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

“Besides the fact that they supposedly proposed something regarding Ukraine and we were ready, and now they are not ready, we also do not see any ‘bright’ future in the economic sphere,” Lavrov said on Monday.

Peskov also criticized US sanctions against Cuba, describing them as “strangulation tactics,” and said Russia is in talks with Havana to provide assistance. He noted that fuel shortages in Havana worsened after the US military operation in Venezuela on Jan. 3 aimed at capturing President Nicolas Maduro, one of Cuba’s main oil suppliers.
